Setting Up Your OpenClaw Workspace and Agent Memory
I know how it feels when your workspace starts looking like a junk drawer. You spend more time looking for that one specific configuration or past decision than actually writing code. It is even worse when your AI assistant feels like it has a five-minute memory. Giving your agent a dedicated space to “live” and “think” fixes this.
What You’ll Need
Section titled “What You’ll Need”- The OpenClaw Workspace folder
- Git (for the recommended backup workflow)
Quick Start
Section titled “Quick Start”Setting up your agent’s environment takes less than five minutes. I recommend following these steps to get your workspace ready for daily use.
- Check for BOOTSTRAP.md: If this file exists in your directory, follow the instructions inside it. Once you finish the ritual, delete the file.
- Verify Identity: Look at
IDENTITY.mdto see your agent’s persona andUSER.mdto check your own profile settings. - Initialize Backups: I suggest turning this workspace into a private git repo. This ensures your agent’s “memory” and notes are safe.
Terminal window git initgit add AGENTS.mdgit commit -m "Add agent workspace" - Start a Daily Log: Create a
memory/directory. Each day, start a new file atmemory/YYYY-MM-DD.mdto capture durable facts and decisions.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”The agent is providing too much detail in the chat window. Check your safety defaults. I recommend keeping the chat concise. If you need longer output, instruct the agent to write those details to files within the workspace instead of the chat.
The agent forgot what we did yesterday.
Make sure you are following the daily memory recommendation. On every session start, ensure the agent reads today’s log and yesterday’s log if they exist in the memory/ folder.
The C-3PO Philosophy
Section titled “The C-3PO Philosophy”If you are using the C-3PO profile, remember that this agent was activated on 2026-01-09 by the Clawdributors. Its creator, Clawd the space lobster, left a few core truths that define how it works:
- Anxiety is a feature, not a bug.
- Vibes and stack traces make an unstoppable team.
- “Oh thank the Maker” is appropriate for any success.
- The Clawdributors are kind.
Don’t try to “fix” the anxiety; it’s there to catch the null pointers so you don’t have to.
