How to Reset OpenClaw Local Configuration

I have been in this position many times. You are working on a project and the local configuration gets messy, or you just want to start with a clean slate. It is frustrating when you want to wipe the data but do not want to go through the trouble of uninstalling and reinstalling the entire tool.

I found that having a direct way to clear state saves a lot of time. If your local environment feels cluttered, you can use the built-in reset command to fix it quickly.

  • OpenClaw CLI installed on your local machine.

The openclaw reset command clears your local configuration and state while keeping the CLI itself installed. I recommend running a test first if you are worried about losing specific data.

To see what will happen without making actual changes, use the dry run flag:

Terminal window
openclaw reset --dry-run

If you are ready to reset everything, run the basic command:

Terminal window
openclaw reset

For automation or scripts where you want to skip confirmation prompts and target specific areas like credentials and sessions, use this version:

Terminal window
openclaw reset --scope config+creds+sessions --yes --non-interactive

If you are concerned about accidentally deleting the wrong data, the source documentation provides a specific solution:

  • Problem: Unsure which files or settings will be removed.
  • Solution: Use the --dry-run flag. This allows you to preview the reset process before any files are deleted.
