Managing Message Reactions Across Channels
I often find that the most frustrating part of building chat tools is dealing with inconsistent APIs. One platform wants a specific ID for a reaction, while another expects a boolean flag. It gets messy fast when you just want your bot to acknowledge a message with a simple thumbs-up.
I prefer using a unified set of semantics to handle these interactions. Here is how to manage reactions across different channels without writing custom logic for every single one.
What You’ll Need
Section titled “What You’ll Need”- Access to supported channels: Discord, Slack, Google Chat, Telegram, WhatsApp, or Signal.
- For Signal: The
channels.signal.reactionNotificationssetting must be enabled to receive inbound reaction events.
Quick Start
Section titled “Quick Start”You can manage reactions using three primary configurations. These work across most supported platforms.
- Add a reaction: Provide the
emojiyou want to use. - Remove all bot reactions: Set
emojito an empty string (""). - Remove a specific emoji: Provide the
emojiand setremove: true.
Channel-Specific Behavior
Section titled “Channel-Specific Behavior”While the semantics are shared, different platforms handle these flags in their own way:
- Discord and Slack: Setting
emoji=""removes every reaction the bot has added to that message. Usingremove: truetargets only the emoji you specify. - Google Chat: An empty
emojistring removes the app’s reactions. Useremove: trueto delete a specific one. - WhatsApp: The
remove: trueflag maps to an empty emoji. You must still provide theemojivalue for this to work. - Telegram: An empty
emojistring removes the bot’s reactions. If you useremove: true, you must still provide a non-emptyemojistring to pass tool validation.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”Telegram Validation Fails
Section titled “Telegram Validation Fails”If you are trying to remove a reaction on Telegram using remove: true, the tool might fail if the emoji field is empty. Ensure you provide the emoji string even when removing it.
Missing Signal Notifications
Section titled “Missing Signal Notifications”If your bot is not reacting to inbound signals, check your configuration. Inbound reaction notifications for Signal only emit system events when channels.signal.reactionNotifications is enabled.
