Personalizing Your AI Experience with USER.md

I often find myself repeating the same preferences every time I start a new session with a tool. It is frustrating to explain my timezone, my name, or how I like to work over and over again. I want my tools to remember who I am so I can get straight to the actual work.

I started using a USER.md file to solve this. It acts as a simple profile that helps the AI understand the human it is helping. Instead of starting from scratch, the AI can look at this file to get the context it needs.

  • A USER.md file in your project directory.

You can set up your profile in about five minutes. Here is the path to get it running.

  1. Create the file: Open or create a file named USER.md.
  2. Fill in your basics: Copy and paste this template to define who you are:
    - **Name:**
    - **What to call them:**
    - **Pronouns:** _(optional)_
    - **Timezone:**
    - **Notes:**
  3. Add your context: Use the Context section to describe your current situation.
    ## Context
_(What do they care about? What projects are they working on? What annoys them? What makes them laugh? Build this over time.)_
  4. Keep it fresh: Update this file as you change projects or find new things that annoy you.
  • Privacy concerns: If you feel like you are writing too much, remember you are just helping the AI learn about a person, not building a dossier. Respect that difference and only include what is helpful for your work.
  • Outdated info: If the AI gives you suggestions that don’t fit your current project, check your Context section. You might need to update the projects you are working on.
